Dell partners with VMware for first public cloud platform
Dell has taken first steps into the public cloud arena by building on its partnership with VMware.
Dell has teamed up with VMware to launch Dell Cloud, a multi-tenanted, virtualised public or hybrid cloud platform based on VMware vCloud Datacentre Services.
Key to the new offering is the level of security offered by Dell addressing one of the major concerns of enterprise customers. The company has developed a multi-level security feature based around Dell's acquisition of SecureWorks and using products from VMware and Trend Micro.
The new, open standards-based system will allow the management and monitoring of network and web application firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, in addition to vulnerability scanning. The company said that the Dell Cloud datacentres were also protected with security boundaries allocated to specific organisations.
While the technology has been released as a beta to US customers, Dell was unable to comment on when it will be available in Europe.
"Dell is excited to announce with VMware our first Public cloud offering that will provide customers with a secure, enterprise solution. With one of the largest bases of VMware installed customers, we will be able to provide seamless interoperability with existing VMware environments." said Steve Schuckenbrock, president, Dell Services
The new launch has been met with approval by analysts. "Our customer surveys show data security and privacy still top the list of concerns about implementing cloud services, and Dell's new cloud is designed to address those concerns," said Gard Little, IDC's IT consulting and systems integration research director.
"Interestingly, this offering should allow Dell to address surveyed customers' second greatest concern, which is migrating systems with on-premise data or applications to the cloud."
