Apple App Store surpasses 25bn download milestone

As Apple prepares to introduce the iPad 3, the 25 billionth App Store application is downloaded.

Over 25 billion apps have been downloaded from the Apple App Store since it set up shop in mid-2008.

The 25 billionth app downloaded was Where's My Water? Free, a game that sees a sewer-dwelling crocodilian named Swampy the Alligator looking to get his plumbing fixed.

The downloader of that app, Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China, is to receive a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card in celebration of the 25 billion mark being reached.

"We'd like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve this historic milestone of 25 billion apps downloaded," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services

"When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users."

iPad incoming

Meanwhile, Apple is preparing for a big launch tomorrow. The iPad 3 is expected to land sometime after 6pm GMT and the rumour mill has already been pushing out all kinds of conjecture.

Many expect the device to have a vastly improved display, with some suggesting it will even be called the iPad HD.

Others believer improved cameras and a better processor than the A5 in the iPad 2 will be announced in San Francisco tomorrow.

Check back on IT Pro tomorrow evening for the breaking news on the iPad 3.
