Interop 2012: Alcatel-Lucent puts 40G Ethernet into the core

Telecoms equipment provider to detail company's 40G plans.

Interop 2012 Las Vegas

Telecoms equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent will outline its plans for putting 40G Ethernet and higher density 10G Ethernet into its core switches as part of its datacentre fabric strategy.

The vendor will reveal its plans at this year's Interop conference in Las Vegas. It will also announce updates to software running on its core switches.

As part of the company's Application Fluent Networking plans, users of the switches will have a low latency, multipath network organisations and service providers can use to create mutli-site private clouds and connect to public clouds, such as AWS.

Its updated OmniSwitch 10K core switch will feature 8 40G Ethernet ports and 16 10G Ethernet port modules. The line cards in the switches permit the OmniSwitch 10K chassis to support up to 64 40G Ethernet ports and up to 256 10G Ethernet ports.

Users can set up a mesh of 10G and 40G connections from server to server or server to storage over a number of active paths. The layer 2 multipath fabric is based on IEEE Shortest Path Bridging standard, which in turn is based on the IEEE 802.1ah Provider Backbone Bridging MAC-in-MAC standard. This is a Layer 2 alternative to MPLS seen on Metro Ethernet implementations.

The deal with Citrix will see Alcatel-Lucent's switches able to allow service providers stricter service level agreements and highly optimised datacentre operation by pulling together Layer 2/3 switching with Layer 4 to 7 application acceleration and WAN optimisation.

Both companies will sell Alcatel-Lucent's switches with Citrix NetScaler Wan optimisation alongside Citrix's XenDesktop and XenServer desktop and server virtualisation applications.
