Nexenta: Enterprises are scared of solid state storage
Storage software vendor claims new product unlocks cost savings from VDI deployments.
Enterprise IT departments are wary of investing in Solid State Disk (SSD) storage because of data corruption and performance fears.
This is the view put forward by Evan Powell, chief executive officer of storage software vendor Nexenta, who claims enterprise IT departments are "scared of SSD".
"People should be scared because SSDs and [hard] disk drives suffer from silent data corruption...which is far more prevalent than many people think," said Powell.
He also took umbrage to claims made by some SSD vendors about the speed of their products. "They all sell their products by saying I can pull 5000 IOPS out of this drive', but after two hours that's down to around 2,000."
The firm recently announced the launch of a new management tool, NexentaVSA, that expands the use of the firm's ZFS-based storage software into virtual desktop environments.
Storage has become the great boat anchor for IT.
The company claims the product can reduce the number of steps it takes to configure and deploy virtual desktops from 150 to four, and lower the associated storage costs.
"Virtual desktops have always been a great idea, but when you take the disk drive out of a PC, which costs around $100 and put it in a legacy storage appliance from another vendor, it'll cost you $800 and it'll be slower," said Powell.
"That's why virtual desktops have never taken off, because the storage costs are too high. Storage has become the great boat anchor for IT."
The company claims its products help end users save money by making proprietary storage platforms easier to manage.
"I was on a CIO call and they said we've transformed their storage costs by causing their legacy vendor to cut the price of their products," he said.
"They tell their legacy vendor that they're pitching their products against Nexenta and then suddenly the price plummets."
