Research: IT offers no help to business leaders
Business leaders claim IT systems and departments are not helping them achieve their goals.
Three quarters of senior executives claim technology does little to help them achieve their business goals, according to a new report.
The Improving Business Operations: The Ambition/Maturity Gap and the Need for BPM report, which was commissioned by platform-as-a-service player Cordys, polled 650 European IT business leaders.
It means that businesses are demanding more from IT and within a tighter timeframe.
The respondents said the top priorities for their businesses were improving customer service (70 per cent), cutting costs (70 per cent) and trying to do more with less (67 per cent).
However, 72 per cent of those surveyed said their IT systems did not help them achieve these goals because projects take longer or cost more than planned.
This was despite all of the IT departments that took part in the survey confirming that they had been asked to help their companies make operational improvements.
In fact, 58 per cent said they had helped their companies cut costs, while 62 per cent claimed to have played a role in improving business processes.
The report also revealed that a quarter of business departments see no harm in bypassing IT to make use of cloud services.
Art Landro, the chief executive officer of Cordys, said the economy was putting greater pressure on IT departments to contribute to needs of the wider business.
"It means that businesses are demanding more from IT and within a tighter timeframe," said Landro.
"The study reveals some of the reasons why IT is failing to meet the business needs, and what the consequences are. But, encouragingly, there were a small group of businesses for which the situation is more positive those using BPM technology to make real step changes."
