A new partnership between the UK IT security industry and Government has been formed to remedy the shortage of trained IT Security professionals.

The union between e-skills UK and the Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP) will see the two organisations work to align their professional skills standards in information security and create a comprehensive industry backed skills framework defining areas of competence to aid learning.

Dr Alastair MacWillson, Chairman of the IISP, said that the agreement will allow the industry to create a common language that individuals, public and private sector employers, and training providers can all use to discuss information security skills.

"This will help us identify skills gaps, and define new training and career pathways to fill them, hence increasing the UK's overall Information Security capability," he said.

Ensuring the UK has a workforce - from entry level right up to the board - that is aware of information security threats and able to tackle them is a key priority, according to Karen Price, CEO of e-skills UK.

"This partnership with IISP will help employers and information security professionals assess and address their skills needs in this business-critical, fast moving area," she said.

In addition to this partnership, IISP and e-skills UK have agreed to collaborate closely on future activities in the area of information security.
