Apple HealthKit fitness app coming with iOS 8
iWatch rumours fueled as Apple shows off new hub for fitness data at WWDC
Apple has announced a "HealthKit" app designed to help users monitor their personal health and fitness data.
HealthKit will ship with the firm's iOS 8 and act as a hub where iPhone users can monitor the input of their health metrics on a daily basis.
Apple SVP of software, Craig Federighi, pointed to HealthKit at WWDC as a way to conglomerate information that is usually spread across multiple apps into one place. The app will be able to pull data from third-party apps with Nike already on board.
Although there are a number of sleep tracking apps on the market for both iPhone and Android, HealthKit will be introducing a way to monitor a user's sleep cycles. Likely to make use of the motion co-processor in the iPhone 5s, the app will detect when a user is tossing and turning in their sleep and wake them up when their body is ready.
The app can also be used in conjunction with doctors and healthcare professionals, added Federighi. Data such as blood pressure and oxygenation levels can be recorded in HealthKit, which will then check those levels against previous entries for irregularities. Should there be any, it will alert professionals to the danger.
Until now Apple has shied away from its own fitness software, allowing third party developers to take the reins. Cupertino is now looking to enter the market directly, and will no doubt launch hardware to accompany it.
Speculation had been mounting for months that Apple would move towards wearable technology in a bid to get ahead of the game. HealthKit will add more fuel to that fire, with an iWatch release still anticipated in the near future from Cupertino.
