SAP HANA SP10 release embraces remote locations
The update will integrate big data and the IoT into business infrastructure
SAP has updates HANA to enable organisations to extend their data synchronisation from the enterprise to remote locations that sit on the edge of the network.
HANA Service Pack 10 (SP10) means organisations can build IoT and data-intensive apps to utilise the information gleaned from areas outside the core business using the SQL Anywhere suite. The data that these apps generate can then be used to help perform critical tasks remotely while workers are either offline or online.
This addition will work together with existing functionality that allows businesses to integrate their systems with the latest Hadoop distributions from Cloudera and Hortonworks, according to SAP. However, new additions in SP10 also allow for faster data transfer with Spark SQL, a single user interface for SAP HANA and Hadoop cluster administration, plus rules-based data movement.
Another new feature in SP10 focuses on high availability and disaster recovery capabilities, helping to prepare organisations to prepare for the critical demands for always-on applications.
Carl Olofson, research vice president of application development and deployment at IDC Research said: "High availability and disaster recovery are some of the most critical requirements for any enterprise-level IT landscape with datacentres.
"The importance of ensuring reliability and certainty that IT operations will continue in the event of a failure cannot be understated. SAP HANA has been designed to provide a solid foundation that facilitates business continuity across the enterprise and reduces the risk of security breaches."
Quentin Clark, SAP's CTO, concluded: "SAP HANA gives customers one integrated platform for transactional and analytic workloads. The new capabilities of SAP HANA ensure datacentre-readiness, synchronization data to any remote system, extend high availability and disaster recovery of enterprise data and perform advanced analytics. We are readying our customers for the inevitable digitisation of our entire economy."
