Businesses can now choose to move their on-premise files into Oracle’s cloud datacentres via Verizon’s own software-defined networks.

The telco is targeting enterprises with its Secure Cloud Interconnect service, saying it cuts latency and provides a more secure connection over which they can transfer data into Oracle Cloud.

BT made a similar pitch with its own VPN connection in June, and Verizon’s service similarly relies on a private multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) connection to send data faster. It also offers an Ethernet network.

Those choosing to migrate data to the cloud via such a connection can take advantage of consumption-based bandwidth, pre-provisioned resources, and controlled application performance.

“Verizon Secure Cloud Interconnect for Oracle FastConnect allows users to connect to applications simply, securely and reliably,” said Shawn Hakl, VP of enterprise networking and innovation at Verizon.

FastConnect is Oracle’s programme for partners like BT and Verizon to offer speedy connections from enterprises’ own infrastructure to its datacentres in the US and Europe.

The programme is designed to make it easier for enterprises to adopt Oracle’s Cloud, as the database giant competes with the likes of Microsoft, HPE, and IBM to become big businesses’ cloud platform of choice.

Diby Malakar, vice president of product management at Oracle, said: “We are providing multiple ways for our customers to deploy their applications in the way that makes good business sense via what is arguably one of the industry’s most reliable networking platforms.”

Verizon, meanwhile, is keen to position itself firmly as an enabler of cloud migrations, and offers connections to Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, HPE, IBM Softlayer and Microsoft as well.
