Akamai makes its serverless edge platform more developer-friendly
EdgeWorkers by Akamai gains a free tier, prioritized API routing, and more
EdgeWorkers by Akamai offers support for multiple uses, including microservices, request processing, and Akamai-as-code management. In its latest release, Akamai provides developers with even more control and capabilities at the edge. In addition to a new free tier, the platform now offers rapid data access and API traffic acceleration.
A total of 60 million EdgeWorker events - up to 30 million per tier - are included for free as part of the new Basic and Dynamic Compute levels.
Akamai's Basic Compute tier caters to applications that need only a small amount of CPU or memory. The Dynamic Compute tier is for extensive workloads with high CPU or RAM requirements.
Additionally, the new EdgeKV capability enables high-availability and low-latency access to data at the edge. A globally distributed key-value store, EdgeKV bridges the gap between edge applications and databases.
Lastly, Akamai's API Acceleration solution ensures API transactions are efficient by prioritizing routing and reserving capacity. The service is optimized for API traffic and utilizes purpose-built hardware to offer increased reliability and performance at scale.

With Akamai Sandbox, developers can create parallel yet isolated sandbox environments to test new configurations quickly while still accessing local origins.
"Since introducing EdgeWorkers, we have been inspired by the creative ways customers are using the Akamai Intelligent Edge to deliver amazing user experiences,” said Lelah Manz, senior vice president of edge technology group at Akamai.
“With this latest platform release, we hope to accelerate this innovation by giving developers the ability to build truly transformative applications at the edge. We know that we're just scratching the surface and can't wait to see what new ideas take shape using EdgeWorkers and the Akamai platform."
