General Electric gets ready to roll out Office 365 to 300,000 staff

GE hopes to boost collaboration and improve teamwork with 365 and Skype for Business

General Electric wants to boost collaboration among 300,000 staff by shifting them all onto Microsoft Office 365.

The cloud suite will be rolled out to GE's workforce in 170 countries, after the firm's IT department picked 365 for its ability to work across devices and platforms.

Teams will be able to work on the same document at the same time with real-time document co-authoring, while GE will also deploy Skype for Business for group calls and meetings.

Office 365's open APIs mean GE will be able to connect mission-critical applications to the set of productivity tools, too.

IT can also use 365's security capabilities to provide employees with secure access to company information on a number of devices while satisfying GE's own security policies, as well as industry regulations.

Jamie Miller, senior VP and CIO of GE, said: "as we deepen our investments in employee productivity, Microsoft's innovative approach to collaboration made Office 365 our first choice for providing scalable productivity tools to our employees worldwide."

"Microsoft and GE share many values in common - openness, transparency, data-driven intelligence and innovation - all of which are driving forces behind Microsoft's own mission to help people and organisations achieve more," said John Case, corporate VP of Microsoft Office.

"As one of the most innovative companies in the world, GE understands what it takes to unleash the potential of its employees. We're delighted GE has selected Office 365 as the productivity and collaboration solution to empower its global workforce."

Neither party confirmed the cost of the deal nor how long the roll out will take, though IT Pro has asked for more details.
