Google goes down: Desktop users hit by search engine outage

Search giant hit by internal server error, preventing desktop users from accessing site

Desktop PC users were left without access to Google's search site earlier today, preventing them from retrieving information and access the firm's range of internet services.

At around 10.30am this morning, PC users that visited the site were greeted with a "500" error page and message that stated: "The server encountered an error and could not complete your request."

The "500" error message is synonymous with internal server errors, but according to downdetector.com the issue appears to have been resolved by around 11am.

Smartphone and tablet users who attempted to access the site via their devices would have encountered no problems, as the issue appears to have been limited to desktop users.

Other Google services including Gmail, Google Drive and Google Calendar were also unaffected, although PC users would have been unable to access directly via the Google homepage during the outage.

The brief outage prompted a flurry of Tweets on micro-blogging platform Twitter, with users joking that rival search Bing was probably having its busiest day ever.Meanwhile others quipped the downtime could be the result of Google having to mass delete web pages in the wake of the recent "Right to be Forgotten" ruling.

So the right to be forgotten has taken its toll: no more Google. They had to delete it all

The Google outage come hot on the heels of Facebook's recent downtime woes, which saw the world's most popular social media site taken offline by an unknown error for approximately 35 minutes.
