Microsoft adds Office 2016 to Windows Store

Preview version can be upgraded to the final version after a year

Microsoft is making Office 2016 available in the Windows Store to ensure those using devices running Windows 10 S can install a preview version of the productivity suite on their tablet.

Preview versions available include Office 365 Personal, Home, Education Plus and Education E5, but users will have to upgrade to the final paid-for version after a year. Once the preview period is over, Office Home & Student 2016 and Office Home & Business 2016 will also be available on Windows 10 S.

"Making Office available in the Windows Store allows people with Surface Laptop running Windows 10 S to get the Office applications that they know and trust," Microsoft explained in an FAQ.

"While Office itself is not in preview, Office is using new install and update processes that are in preview. As a result, Office in the Windows Store may occasionally behave in unexpected ways."

Microsoft will also include a one-year Office 365 Personal preview on Surface Laptops running Windows 10 S that ship during the preview period. Like anyone downloading Windows 10 from Windows Store, they will be able to pay for a subscription once the promotional rate ends.

As announced at the launch of Windows 10 S, any device running the lighter version of Windows will only be able to download applications from Windows Store rather than any source like the full-fat version of Windows 10.

Microsoft said the Office suite available for Windows 10 S devices will include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote for Windows, Outlook, Access and Publisher (although the final three applications aren't available for Office 365 Education users).
