Facebook Campus allows students to connect with classmates

New Facebook feature allows students to create and join campus groups, discussions and more

Facebook began as a project to connect students at Harvard, the college Mark Zuckerberg attended. Now, the social media goliath is going back to its roots — sort of — by launching Facebook Campus to help connect college students to classmates and college happening.

Facebook Campus is a part of the Facebook app that allows users to create a separate Campus profile. They then link it to their college using their college email address and anticipated graduation year. Students can also add their major, minor, classes and hometown to get even more personalized interaction.

Once Campus is set up, users can find groups and events at their school and connect with other students who share the same interests. Plus, when they share information on their Campus, it is only available to other students on the Campus.

It also offers a Campus-only news feed that keeps all Campus members up to date on events, people and groups on that Campus. Users also have access to a Campus directory to find classmates based on the classes, major, graduation year and more. Finally, students can create Campus chatrooms for their dorm, clubs and groups.

Facebook Campus will start small with the following colleges and universities:

  • Benedict College
  • Brown University
  • California Institute of Technology
  • College of William & Mary
  • Duke University
  • Florida International University
  • Georgia Southern University
