Siemens Enterprise Communications has launched its new OpenScape Business unified communication platform for SMBs.

The system combines elements from its HiPath 3000 and OpenScape Office solutions on new hardware with an integrated set of features.

According to Tony Smith, sales director for indirect channel at Siemens Enterprise Communications, the system provides seamless integration with Microsoft Outlook and Exchange and includes both mobile device and light IVR functionality. “In the past, SMBs have tended to buy UC as a separate bolt-on, [instead] OpenScape Business provides all-in-one UC straight out of the box to help the channel sell based on value,” he explains.

The new solution has already been certified against several SMB focused SIP-based services such as Gamma Telecom and BT Hipcom, and offers an open API to allow third party integrators to extend UC functionality.

Smith points out that although its a new platform, the system will support TDM functionality so current HiPath 3000 customers can upgrade and still use existing ISDN and analogue desktop phones. The SMB edition is aimed at up to 500 users on a single site.

The sales director concedes that it is not the cheapest platform but points out that the combination of features designed for SMBs offers an aggressively priced end-to-end solution. Existing HiPath 3000 units will not be phased out immediately, but Smith suggests that the older models will no longer be a focus for resale and will be EOL at some point.

The launch of OpenScape Business marks the start of a number of product upgrades for SEC, which will launch an Enterprise version for larger deployment later in the year. The new solutions will be sold through distributors Nimans and Westcon and the firm is offering a two and a half day training refresher course at a discounted rate to help partners sell the new platform.
