Android Wear smartwatch line launched by Google
Manufacturers including LG, Asus, HTC, Motorola, and Samsung all signed up to produce watches.
Google has announced Android Wear its own smart watch platform that will fit under the Nexus branding.
Using Google Now's voice-recognition tech at its core, Android Wear allowing users to use the accessory without touching it.
LG, Asus, HTC, Motorola, and Samsung were all announced as hardware partners, while Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, MediaTek, and Qualcomm will manufacture chips for the devices.
Fossil will introduce branded watches in late 2014.
Google's Sundar Pichai, SVP of Android, Chrome and Apps said that this was just the beginning.
"We've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with mobile technology. That's why we're so excited about wearables they understand the context of the world around you, and you can interact with them simply and efficiently, with just a glance or a spoken word," he noted in a Google blog.
The range of watches will be released with a new catalogue of apps, operated by your voice. Users will be able to their watch a question, launch the music player, transmit films to TVs or launch apps just by saying OK, Google'.
A health and fitness suite will be available for the watches to monitor your exercise regime, with promises that all your favourite fitness apps' will be coming to the device. Twitter, Facebook and Google Hangouts will also be integrated to help you keep up with your social networks even if your phone is out of reach.
Developers will be able to create new apps for the small screen with the ability to tailor app notifications for their existing apps and a whole new range of APIs will be released specifically for the wearable.
"We're always seeking new ways for technology to help people live their lives and this is just another step in that journey. Here's to getting the most out of the many screens you use every daywhether in your car, in your pocket or, very soon, on your wrist," Pichai added.
