Surface 2 price cut as Surface Pro 3 sells out in UK

Microsoft has temporarily cut prices for the Surface 2 in the US, while the Surface Pro 3 sells out in the UK

Microsoft is reportedly dropping the price of its Surface 2 tablets for customers in the US, temporarily lowering the regular price by $100 to $349 for the 32GB tablet, according to Small Business Trends.

The larger 64GB tablet will now be priced at $449, and the 64GB with 4G LTE at $579.

This is a temporary price reduction similar to the one for the Surface Pro 2 in July ahead of the Surface Pro 3 release.

There has been speculation this latest move is a sign that Microsoft will be discontinuing the Surface 2 in the near future, with the price reduction indicating that Microsoft are ready to move on with newer devices.

The tablet, which launched in October, runs the Windows 8 RT operating system, which has been widely unpopular with users. The discount only applies until September 27, and is available from both physical and online outlets.

Meanwhile, sales of the Surface Pro 3 in the UK have been huge, with every shop reportedly sold out of the tablet.

The device was only launched on Thursday 29 August but, according to WinBeta, stores have been unable to keep up with demand.

In response, Microsoft told the site: "People's response to Surface Pro 3 has been positive. Our primary goal is and will remain to get Surface into the hands of all productive people who want a tablet that matches their unique productivity needs. For those eager to buy, we recommend they go to JLP, Dixons and Argos."
