EE claims to have the biggest 4G customer base in Europe
An extra 1.4 million customers join mobile operator’s next gen network this quarter, but revenues flatline
Around 1.4 million customers have joined EE's 4G network in the third quarter of its financial year, as the mobile operator continues on its quest to have six million customers signed up to its superfast services by the end of the year.
According to its latest financial figures, around 5.6 million subscribers now use the firm's 4G network, giving it the biggest 4G customer base of any operator in Europe, it claimed.
The firm claims to have rolled out 4G to over 75 per cent of the UK population, with double speed 4G set to be online in 40 cities by the end of the year.
EE saw a net increase of 178,000 postpaid connections including M2M (Machine to Machine) devices, and a net increase of 119,000 postpaid mobile customers (excluding M2M).
It added that 60.3 per cent of customers were now on postpaid (as opposed to pay-as-you-go) and these users generated an average of six times higher ARPU than prepaid customers.
It managed to keep customer churn to 1.1 per cent, which marks the 14th consecutive month it's managed to keep this figure below 1.2 per cent.
Despite the extra subscribers, EE's revenues flatlined, showing no growth. However, when regulatory cuts were bought into the picture, revenues fell by 1.2 per cent to 1.5 billion.
Mobile average revenues per user managed to grow slightly at 1.6 per cent, but when regulatory cuts were added this fell to just 0.5 per cent.
The operator said it was making improvements to its network and was the first and only UK operator to announce seamless Wi-Fi calling on major new devices including the iPhone 6.
In parallel to this, EE said it was installing new 4G equipment in rural areas to rollout voice over 4G (VoLTE) using the 800 MHz spectrum next year.
Neal Milsom, chief financial officer of EE, said the firm was "delivering consistent underlying performance in a highly competitive environment while continuing to face significant regulatory pressure on our revenues".
"We are investing to further innovate on behalf of our customers by delivering not just the best network but also improvements in customer service, a range of attractive EE branded devices, Shared Plans, and soon EE TV," he added.
