Vodafone takes on Three with new inclusive roaming bundles

New or upgrading pay monthly customers will get inclusive calls, texts and internet in 40 European countries

Vodafone has announced pay monthly customers will now benefit from inclusive roaming in 40 European destinations and 4G coverage in 93 countries.

Unlimited calls, texts and picture messages and a monthly data allowance of up to 4GB are all included for those who are joining or upgrading to its 12 and 24-month pay monthly Red and Red Value bundles.

"Our customers made it clear to us that they wanted the freedom to use their phones worry free whilst abroad and we have listened so now, all new and upgrading Red pay monthly customers will be able to stay in touch with their loved ones easily whilst they're on holiday," Glafkos Persianis, commercial director at Vodafone UK, said.

"Red Value Bundle customers who have chosen to take advantage of our Spotify Premium entertainment pack will can take their tunes to the pool and beyond when they go roaming - completely worry-free. With inclusive roaming across 40 destinations - we really are making Vodafone the home of worry-free roaming."

The company explained it decided to add on the benefit for new or upgrading customers because more than 80 per cent of all overseas trips taken by its pay monthly customers are within its new inclusive roaming zone, so it's likely customers would welcome inclusive calls, texts and data in those destinations.

However, Vodafone's offer is not as attractive as Three's Feel at Home offer, because it only covers countries in Europe, rather than its rival's deal, which also covers Hong Kong, the United States, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Macau, Israel and Indonesia.

"Vodafone's proposition stacks up favourably against the other deals on the surface, but does have some significant shortcomings when you look more closely," Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com commented.

"Confusingly, the amount of data you can use abroad is not the same amount you have to use when you're at home. For example, an 8GB tariff only gives you 2GB of roaming data to use within these inclusive destinations."
