Telcos offer support amid COVID-19 pandemic

The global COVID-19 pandemic is reaching the point where companies worldwide are shutting down voluntarily and by law, schools are sending kids home for several weeks and there are rumblings of a 14-day lockdown in the U.S. In light of this uncertainty, some folks are concerned about telecommunications and their ability to remain connected.

Many fear their inability to pay their internet or cellphone bill because of illness or their workplace shutting down for an extended time will result in a disconnect. Over the past few days, the FCC has aimed to reduce these fears by launching the “Keep Americans Connected Pledge” that it asked telecommunications nationwide companies to join.

In the pledge, companies promise for 60 days to not disconnect accounts or charge late fees due to nonpayment caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. The pledge also includes opening public Wi-Fi hotspots for all Americans to use.
