IDATE: Number of internet connected devices to hit 80bn by 2020

Market watcher predicts big growth for the Internet of Things.

Broadband connections

The number of objects connected to the internet will soar by more than 40 per cent over the next seven years, predicts market watcher IDATE.

The organisation made the pronouncement in a report into the future of the Internet of Things (IoT) market.

IDATE defines IoT as a concept whereby any item can connect to the internet and retrieve information to "enhance its intrinsic value".

"It includes communicating devices and M2M [machine to machine], but it aims to go beyond [this] by enabling any object to connect and leverage the internet, even if it does not contain the electronics required to connect directly [to it]," the market watcher states.

Items that fall into the latter category are considered by IDATE to be part of the Internet of Objects (IoO), a subset of the IoT.

It claims that 15 billion objects were connected to the internet in 2012, despite just 4 billion being hooked up two years before that.

Samuel Ropert, the IDATE report's project leader, said the number of internet connected objects looks set to grow even more during the coming years.

"In 2020, there will be 80 billion objects," he said.

Of these, around 85 per cent could be classified as members of the IoO family, while M2M and communicating devices will account for around four and 11 per cent, respectively.

The analyst house is the latest in a long line of industry watchers to hail the growth of the Internet of Things, with Gartner recently urging CIOs to find ways to include the concept in their IT strategies.
