Virgin Media now offers free Wi-Fi at 150 Tube stations

Virgin Media now provides free Wi-Fi in 150 different tube stations across London

Passengers travelling on London's tube lines can now enjoy free Wi-Fi at 150 different stations courtesy of Virgin Media's own underground network.

Six stations were added to the network prior to the announcement: Wimbledon, Richmond, Morden, East Ham, Barking and Upminster.

Director of Broadband at Virgin Media, Joe Lathan, said: "This is a milestone moment for Virgin Media with 150 Tube stations and more than two and a half million devices now connected to Wi-Fi on London Underground.

"Tube passengers have loved the Wi-Fi service ever since we launched in time for London 2012. Now they can benefit from live travel information, news and social media in Tube stations across the capital."

Free access to the Wi-Fi is available to mobile customers with O2, EE, Three, Vodafone and Virgin Media, or non-members can pay 2/day for access.

It is claimed that more than 2.5 million devices are registered with the service and that more than 3TB of data are being consumed by them each day.

Meanwhile, King's Cross St. Pancras is said to be the busiest station, with 50GB of data downloaded by passengers each day.

Gareth Powell, London Underground's director of strategy and service development, added: "Wi-Fi on the Tube is one of many ways we're improving our customers' journeys and the service has moved from strength-to-strength since it launched in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games."
