BT upgrades almost 50,000 business customers to 76Mbits/sec
The free upgrade demonstrates its commitment to business broadband, the company says
BT has upgraded 46,000 of its business broadband customers to 76Mbits/sec broadband for free, without them having to do anything.
The company said it wanted to roll out the upgrade as its new standard broadband package for SMBs, rather than providing just 38Mbits/sec as it did previously.
"We're helping UK [SMBs] work smarter and faster in the office - and on the move - as they increasingly embrace cloud-based services," Mike Tomlinson, MD UK SME at BT, said.
"By making 76Mbits/sec our new standard business fibre broadband speed we are ensuring brilliant connectivity at a speed that will enable them to grow and thrive. Add to this our superfast 4G mobile network and our customers really are better connected than ever before."
The news comes as Populus released a report outlining how enterprises are more reliant on their broadband than ever, with the majority of web-based services now requiring an instant connection, which 76Mbits/sec broadband provides.
The research firm said 64% of companies think they will need faster broadband speeds from their current provider in the near future, while more than three quarters told the firm they would not be able to operate for more than24 hours without the internet.
The majority of business users need a fast connection for everyday tasks such as sending and receiving emails, making and receiving payments and to power cloud-based applications and services.
BT isn't just focussing on existing customers. It is also offering new customers access to BT Business Infinity broadband with a minimum speed of 76Mbits/sec for a reduced monthly cost of 14.99 a month plus line rental if they sign up before the end of the month.
