Facebook appoints Hugo Barra as VP of VR
Barra joins the social network from Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi
Facebook has appointed Xiaomi's former international vice president as VP of VR, helping the social network push forward its virtual reality efforts.
He will be responsible for developing how Facebook uses Oculus, the virtual reality company it bought a few years ago, as well as working on other integrations of the technology into Facebook's future.
"I'm excited that Hugo Barra is joining Facebook to lead all of our virtual reality efforts, including our Oculus team. Hugo's in China right now, so here we are together in VR. It seems fitting," Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a blog post.
"Hugo shares my belief that virtual and augmented reality will be the next major computing platform. They'll enable us to experience completely new things and be more creative than ever before. Hugo is going to help build that future, and I'm looking forward to having him on our team."
He said he's known Bara for a long time, from when he helped developed the Android operating system and through his time working for Xiaomi.
Barra replied to Zuckerberg's post saying he's very excited to join Facebook. "It's been a dream of mine to work in virtual reality even back when AR/VR were just figments of science fiction; now we're taking selfies in virtual worlds," he said.
Barra will replace ex-Oculus chief executive who stood down from his role leading up Facebook's virtual reality division last month. However, the newly created role will take care of much more than just Oculus, Facebook explained, bringing together the hardware and software it has been developing over the last few years.
