Windows 10 1809 support to continue through November 2020
Microsoft makes moves to extend support services another six months
Just a few short weeks after Microsoft postponed the end of support for a selection of Windows 10 1709 versions, the company has announced it will do the same for Windows 10 1809. Microsoft has attributed this delay to the current pandemic, citing it would like to “contribute to reducing the stress our customers face right now.”
Microsoft’s announcement, which was posted to the company’s support site on April 14, said it will now release the final security updates for Windows 10 1809 Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstation and IoT Core on Nov. 10, 2020. Support for Windows 10 1809, which launched in November 2018, was originally set to end on May 12.
The update continues, "In addition, we are temporarily pausing Microsoft initiated feature updates for Home and Pro editions running on version 1809. The rollout process restarts for Microsoft-initiated feature updates for devices running on Windows 10, version 1809 will be dramatically slowed and closely monitored in advance of the delayed November 10, 2020 end of service date to provide adequate time for a smooth update process."
Windows 10 1809 isn’t the only product receiving a six-month reprieve. SharePoint Foundation 2010, Project Server 2010, Windows Server 1809 and the current iteration of Configuration Manager 1810 will also receive extensions as a result of the pandemic. These extensions will mean continued monthly security updates and as-needed emergency fixes and support services.
In its announcement, Microsoft added, “We recognize this is an evolving situation. We will continue to listen to our customers and keep this announcement up to date as needed.”
