MoD will build UK cybercrime centre in Corsham
The Wiltshire town will house the MoD's Cyber Security Operations Centre
The Ministry of Defence's Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC) will be built in the Wiltshire town of Corsham, the government has revealed.
The new centre will play an important role in tackling cybercrime in the country, staffed by security experts who will apparently use "state-of-the-art" methods and tools to protect the Ministry of Defence from cyber attacks.
Corsham is already an instrumental part of the Ministry of Defence's security operation, with its underground city that currently holds the department's military security communication centre.
However, with the growing threat from cybercrime, so the focus has now shifted to protect the nation from hackers.
The new centre will be built using a 40 million share of a total 1.9bn investment over the next five years in cyber security, announced by Chancellor Gorge Osborne last year. The funds demonstrate a renewed focus by the government to fight hackers and large-scale digital criminals.
"This new operations centre will ensure that our armed forces continue to operate securely," Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said. "Our increasing defence budget means that we can stay ahead of our adversaries in cyberspace while also investing in conventional capabilities."
North Wiltshire MP James Gray added that choosing Corsham will have a positive impact on the town's economy. He is proud to see the area " "making a useful contribution to the defence of the realm."
It hasn't yet been announced when work will start to transform the site into a cyber centre, or any third parties involved in the development.
