Microsoft bolsters threat intelligence capabilities with Miburo acquisition
Cyber threat and research firm will tackle malicious foreign information campaigns as part of Microsoft’s Customer Security and Trust organization
Microsoft has announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire cyber threat analysis and research firm Miburo.
The New York-based vendor specializes in the detection of and response to foreign information operations through a combination of analysis, consulting, and training.

Free downloadLed by founder Clint Watts, Miburo will now become part of Redmond giant’s Customer Security and Trust Organization, where its analysts will work closely with the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center, the Threat Context Analysis team, and data scientists.
By doing so, Microsoft says the new Miburo analysts will enable the company to expand its threat detection and analysis capabilities to address new cyber-attacks, as well as highlight how foreign actors implement information operations in conjunction with other malicious tactics.
Founded in 2012, Miburo states its mission as being to protect democracies and the free information environment, as well as ensure the integrity and resilience of the free internet against potential manipulation.
Since its inception, the firm has grown to become a leading expert in the identification of foreign information operations, with its research teams working to detect and attribute malign and extremist influence campaigns across 16 languages.
“With the acquisition of Miburo, we will continue our mission to take action, and to partner with others in the public and private sectors to find long-term solutions that will stop foreign adversaries from threatening public and private sector customers and, in fact, the very foundations of our democracy,” Microsoft said in an announcement.
In a Twitter post, Miburo simply said the company was “excited” about the acquisition. Microsoft did not disclose financial details about the transaction.
