European Space Agency renews Lenovo NeXtScale contract
The systems will be used to process the European Space Agency's Gaia Project data
The European Space Agency has announced it has renewed its contract with Lenovo to use the company's NeXtScale systems to process the data generated by The ESA's Gaia Project.
The Gaia Project's aim is to collate data about more than a billion stars and generating a map of the Milky Way, as it stands at present. To do this, the ESA needed the technology to store and manage the volumes of data accurately.
The ESA predicts it will have obtained more than a petabyte of data by the time the project is complete, so it was looking for a solution that had the scalability it needed.
It chose the NeXtScale system because the ESA believes Lenovo's solution offers better performance, efficiency and flexibility than other options, additionally meaning multiple workloads can be processed at the same time, which was a key requirement of the organisation.
"We have always placed our customers at the heart of everything we do," Wilfredo Sotolongo, VP of the Data Centre Group at Lenovo said.
"That is why we constantly evolve and invest in innovation in order to provide our customers with the most competitive solutions on the market, that will help them achieve success in their business or mission.
"Collaborations such as the one we have with ESA help us maintain our leadership and continue to be an important benchmark in the high-performance computing industry."
The ESA has been working with Lenovo's storage solutions since 2011, both on the Gaia Project and others that required the storage and management of high volumes of data.
