Gartner calls for IT action over influx of Gen Y workers
Market watcher calls on businesses to prepare for arrival of Generation Y types in the workplace.
Market watcher Gartner is urging business decision makers to start preparing now for the influx of Generation Y employees into the workplace over the coming years.
The analyst predicts the members of Generation Y will account for 75 per cent of the workforce by 2025, and claims IT buyers need to start making preparations for this.
Generation Y is a sociological term used to classify people born between the years 1981 to 1989, although other definitions include individuals born up to the year 2000.
Generation Y has a higher appetite to look externally when seeking a new IT solutions.
Frank Ridder, research vice president at Gartner, said organisations need to be aware that Generation Y has very different ideas about how to procure IT.
"Generation Y has a higher appetite to look externally when seeking a new IT solutions," he said.
"To leverage those solutions, they are willing to take some risks and to give some trust to the quality of an externally provided service such as a cloud," he continued.
Gartner believes the difference in work attitude and values of the generation will create problems for businesses if they don't act now.
"Generation Y values different things and has a higher degree of trust toward what external sources can deliver," said Gartner in a statement.
"While the demand for low-cost and high-quality services is not any different from today's purchasing attributes, the demand for speed is much higher with today's impatient Generation Y workers, and customer experience joining the list of key purchasing attributes."
To this end, the analyst is calling on organisations to engage with Generation Y workers while fleshing out their IT sourcing strategies to ensure they align with their expectations and behaviours.
"Generation Y impacts are not coming overnight and organisations have up to 12 years before 75 per cent of their workforce will come from this generation," the Gartner statement continued.
"However it is crucial for organisations to understand their own impact timeline so that they can prepare, plan and start implementing initiatives early enough."
