Ghost car SatNav debuted by Jaguar Land Rover
The company has developed a 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen giving drivers a full view of the road around them
Jaguar Land Rover has developed a SatNav that gives drivers the ability to see everything around them, with the added feature of following a 'ghost car' for extra safety.
The Follow-Me Ghost Car Navigation and 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen are both under development, but could be introduced in future to help drivers become more aware of what is around them at all times.
The ghost car will ensure drivers' eyes are on the road at all times, even if they think they have a clear route, while the transparent car pillars mean accidents with motorcyclists and cyclists could be reduced.
The illusion of transparency would be created via screens on the inside of the car that would have images projected from cameras around the outside of the car onto them. Pedestrians, cyclists and other hazards would be highlighted to the driver via halos around them.
The pillars would be activated when the driver indicates to change direction or approaches a junction and looks behind their seat into the 'blind spots'.
Dr Wolfgang Epple, director of research and technology at Jaguar Land Rover, said: "Our ultimate aim is to reduce road accidents and enhance the urban driving experience. The Jaguar Land Rover research team is developing this technology to improve visibility and to give the driver the right information at the right time.
"If we can keep the driver's eyes on the road ahead and present information in a non-distracting way, we can help drivers make better decisions in the most demanding and congested driving environments."
An additional feature of the system is it can help with more accurate navigation by telling drivers where to go using visible landmarks rather than specific road names, which are often obscured or hard to read from the road.
