Peterborough to become UK's first 'gigabit city'

Digital City Peterborough has officially launched, introducing a cutting-edge digital ecosystem to the city

Peterborough is set to become one of the most technologically advanced cities in the world with the launch of Digital City Peterborough, a venture that will see residents and businesses across the city running on an ultrafast citywide fibre network as part of the UK's first gigabit city.

The network has been built over the last two years, currently connecting more than 100 public sector sites before extending to more businesses across Peterborough. Companies based in the city will then be able to make use of ubiquitous gigabit-speed services.

Gavin Elsey, cabinet member for digital, waste, and street scene, said: "Digital City Peterborough will pave the way for UK cities. The growth of the tech sector in a non-traditional tech city is vital in ensuring that the city continues to grow in a sustainable and viable way. Peterborough City Council, through the Digital City Peterborough programme, will ensure the city continues to attract investment and the very best tech expertise."

It is hoped that the launch will see the digital talent pool in Peterborough grow alongside companies broadening their operations and creating new software and technology roles. Digital City Peterborough also plans to work with schools and colleges to ensure young people leave education with the right skills.

"The Digital City Peterborough programme will work to position Peterborough as Britain's digital epicenter," said Richard Godfrey, assistant director for Digital. "It is at the heart of the UK and is a much more affordable destination for businesses to operate from than the capital, which is only under an hour away.

"The growing digital ecosystem means all stakeholders are interconnected and able [to] meet the requirements of an ever more digitally-driven world."
