Apple not providing aid to Republican National Convention
The tech giant is reportedly taking a stance against Donald Trump
Apple will reportedly not provide any funding or other support for the Republican National Convention in July, citing Donald Trump's controversial comments about women, immigrants and minorities.
In the past, Apple has provided technology and funding to both the Democratic and Republican conventions, reports Politico. It provided about $140,000 in MacBooks and other technology to each party in 2008. The company did not provide any financial support in 2012, but it did lend products to both conventions.
"We are working with a variety of major tech partners who are focused on being part of the American political process," a spokeswoman from the GOP convention effort told Politico when asked about Apple's decision.
By declining to provide aid to the convention, Apple stands apart from several other major tech giants. In April, Google announced it would serve as the official livestream provider at the convention and Microsoft revealed that, although it would not provide funding to the Republicans as it has in the past, it would donate computers and software to the convention. Facebook has pledged "financial and other support" for the event, the company confirmed in June, despite CEO Mark Zuckerberg's criticisms of Trump's immigration platform.
Meanwhile, HPE also recently announced that it would not help fund the Republican convention, despite having been a major donor in 2012. CEO Meg Whitman, a former Republican nominee for governer of California, has been openly critical of Trump, likening him to Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler and calling him "unfit" to be president.
Whether or not Trump responds to Apple's decision remains to be seen. He has criticised the company in the past, calling for a boycott of Apple products due to the company's refusal to build a backdoor into the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone.
IT Pro approached Apple for comment, but had not received a response at the time of publication.
