Nokia unveils the world’s first telecom AI library

The library features AI use cases for optimizing network speed, performance, and scalability

Nokia has released a library of artificial intelligence (AI) use cases for telecommunication providers through a public cloud, an industry first.

Developed in collaboration with Microsoft, the Nokia AVA AI-as-a-service combines Nokia's security framework with Microsoft Azure's digital architecture to help communications service providers (CSPs) take on 5G and cloud computing challenges.

Nokia claims its new solution can integrate AI into CSPs' networks nine times faster than private clouds. Nokia also stated that it takes just about four weeks to complete data set-up for the AI use cases.

Within a week of implementing the initial data setup, CSPs can deploy additional AVA AI use cases across multiple network clusters and allocate resources as needed. Additionally, Nokia's security framework on Azure ensures data is isolated, separated, and protected as if it were in ‌‌a‌‌ ‌‌private‌‌ ‌‌cloud.

"CSPs are under constant pressure to reduce costs by automating business processes through AI and machine learning," said Friedrich Trawoeger, vice president of cloud and cognitive services at Nokia.

Trawoeger continued, "To meet market demands, telcos are turning to us for Telco AI-as-a-Service and this launch represents an important milestone in our multi-cloud strategy. Operators can achieve significantly faster implementation times and can access a library of AI use cases remotely to improve network performance, lower costs, and reduce environmental impact at the same time."

TPG, an Australian mobile operator, reports being the first company to use Nokia AVA AI on a public cloud‌ ‌following‌ ‌its‌ ‌adoption‌ ‌of‌‌ ‌‌a‌‌ ‌‌local‌‌ ‌‌instance‌‌ ‌‌of‌‌ ‌‌Microsoft‌‌ ‌‌Azure.

Using Nokia's AI use cases, the firm improved its network coverage, reduced radio frequency optimization cycle times by ‌half,‌ ‌and‌ ‌eliminated‌ ‌drive testing‌ ‌to‌ ‌lower ‌CO2‌ ‌emissions.

TPG head of radio and device engineering, Declan O'Rourke, stated, "Nokia's AVA AI as a service utilizes artificial intelligence and analytics to help us maintain a first class, optimized service for our subscribers, helping us to predict and deal with issues before they occur."
