Panel Profile: SmartDebit CIO Gavin Scruby
We get face-to-face with one of the IT Pro Panellists
Welcome to the IT Pro Panel Profile, where we talk to the CIOs, experts and IT leaders that make up the IT Pro Panel, and discover their top tech, pet peeves and IT inspirations.
The world of finance can be a slightly odd one in many respects; on the one hand, it’s one of the most dynamic and fast-moving industries around, but on the other, many aspects of it haven’t changed all that much since the middle of last century. In recent years, however, fintech firms have begun to take advantage of things like new open banking laws to shake up the status quo and start reinventing financial services.
SmartDebit is one such company, and as CIO, Gavin Scruby is tasked with operating and overseeing the technical infrastructure that underpins its services, managing critical functions like uptime and security for the organisation’s customers. With numerous regulatory and compliance strictures to meet, it’s not an easy task.
Aside from his work at SmartDebit, Gavin is also involved with numerous companies throughout the startup ecosystem, lending his expertise to help smaller companies get off the ground.
CIO - SmartDebit
Describe your role in 20 words or fewer.
Director and CIO of a recurring payments Fintech and involved with virtual accelerators and scale-up consultancies across many industries.
What was your first computer?
Like many people, I got started with a BBC Model B - one of the more powerful 32KB models.
What do you like most about working in IT?
I love that it touches on every possible aspect of business and life, from HR to hiking.
If you could magically get rid of one piece of technology forever, what would it be, and why?
Batteries, or at least the restrictions current generations create - these are now the brake on so much advancement, from watches to transport.
What future tech innovations are you most excited about?
Generalised AI, music technology, personal transport automation, battery advancements, and personalised health tracking, to name a few!
Who’s your biggest inspiration in the world of tech?
Inspiration for me comes from people who do not restrict their interests to one domain and follow ideas across subjects for the fun of it, often forming the basis of new technologies. These are people like Leonardo Da Vinci (of course), Benjamin Franklin and Gottfried Leibniz. I don't see so much of this in modern entrepreneur technologists.
